Book Cover Art

Mon May 9, 2011, 10:24 AM
Happy Monday!

I've been getting so many emails from many of you wondering how to break into doing cover arts....so I figure it's best if I just do a journal. :)

First off, I've never solicited my work to publishers/authors - not once.
They have always approached me for the work... and it started a couple of years ago with my very first cover being "Light Beneath Ferns" by Anne Spollen.

I do not wish to discuss my rates - because it truly depends on many factors - i.e., where you are at your level of proficiency, the client, the kind of publication -- a lot of factors.
You have to charge what you feel is right for you.

Also, I've been asked how I've gotten so many...
I've been very fortunate in that I've done the covers of some very well known authors - they kindly refer me to other writers for my work...and things have taken off from there.
I also do freelance work with film studios (a lot of you know this already), so i am in a circle of individuals that know who I am and can access me rather easily....this also helps.

I do this to support my family.  As many of you know my husband lost all of his employment and has still not found anything close to what we were at to keep things normal for us (and not luxurious - but merely as i said, "normal").
It's very expensive for a family of 6 in southern California. :(
So all of my work has been going to provide for us.... and still I am not doing enough.... but all I can do is try and keep going forward with the various projects I have.

Some of you who read this journal are the authors who have hired me - and to you I say, "Thank you".  There is not enough thanks in this world for the opportunities you have so graciously given to me.  I am deeply appreciative and honored.

The book covers have opened many doors to me as an artist - and I hope to continue growing and doing better works in many new directions - some of which include but not limited to, greeting cards, posters,  gift items that will be sold in stores starting here in the United States.

I hope this helps to answer some of your questions....

Have a beautiful week everyone!

Claudia

edited to add that :iconartifice22: brought up this point:
One thing you forgot to mention in your journal though is location. You live in California, which is a MAJOR boon for people wanting to make a living at graphic design for books and movies. For the pee-ons out here in the boondocks of Vermont, we can waste away forever doing under-paid graphic jobs here and there, but we'll never make a living at this in the leagues of people such as yourself. If someone really wants to "go big" they gotta make sure they're living in the right place - NY, CA, Boston, Chicago.

Blessed John Paul II the GREAT!

Sun May 1, 2011, 9:18 AM
:)

I'm in a happy mood today - one of my biggest heroes in the world was beatified - one step closer to becoming a saint.
A man I had the honor of talking to for 10-15 entire minutes - a short time that forever changed my life.
Pope John Paul the Great!

An incredible day in my house today!  :)

Anywhoo - for the first five who reply to this journal - I'll feature one of your works. (No profanity or obscene works will be accepted).

Final Cut is Up

Thu Sep 16, 2010, 11:09 AM
Hi guys,
You all wanted me to update you when Catie's final cut of the music video was done -
they went a different avenue than they expected - and we love the outcome.

You can see it on You Tube

www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfF4jG…

You have to click the link that says, "Video" on this page to see it --

You can click on something on their little player (not sure where) to enlarge it.

I'm excited, my daughter's rough version of her music video for her original song "Why" got finished today - when I say rough - this was used to promote her song and her video-ability... she passed with flying colors and got the go ahead for a full production video of the song.
Next month she will begin the production of the video - at the studios in Los Angeles (obviously can't say at this time which ones or give any more info - on strict gag orders by her manager).

Please watch Catie and let me know how you like it.  My little girl is not so little anymore!
But I'm so proud of her....

Hi everyone,
I was recently honored to be asked to be a regular contributor for a new photoshop magazine to hit the shelves this summer/fall...
I am going to be doing semi-regular tutorials. :)

I wanted to ask you what kind of tutorials are you most interested in receiving?

I need your help as I don't really know what most people really want.....

Based on your feedback I will do my first tutorial within the next few weeks for the premier issue.

I am not going to give the name yet - as I want to wait until my tutorial is finished and ready for publication. :)
I was told it will be at all the major booksellers.

Sending you all my love and send me your suggestions for tutorials and I'll do my best to accommodate.

The Savoy Royal Palace is showing one of my works!

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 1, 2010, 8:31 AM
I just received confirmation that one of my pieces, "Let Them Eat Cake", is going to be shown at the Savoy Royal Palace!!!
The “Bottega Reale” organised from the association “Le terre dei Savoia” with the consultancy of MIAAO, theInternational Museum of Applied Arts Today of Torino, Italy.
The “Bottega reale” inauguration will be held on 20th March 2010 at Racconigi’s castle, the famous Savoy family Royal Palace. It is an innovative museum shop where a selection of products, connected with the royal imaginary, will be shown and sell to the public.

Do any of you live near Torino???  If so, and you plan on attending, is there any possible way you could get a photo for me of the work hanging???

I would be so honored and I'd like to surprise :iconlisajen-stock: with it as a gift!!!

I am praying somebody on my watch list and sees this journal lives near Torino....

Sending you all my love on this busy Monday  morning....

World Famous Photo of Crying Face in a Glacier

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 6, 2009, 4:06 AM

This week has been quite exciting for me -- one of my best friends, Michael Nolan (world famous wildlife photographer) had a picture that has literally made it around the globe a few times and back.

Here's the pic:

i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/0…

and one of the blogs:

northwardho.blogspot.com/2009/…

It started a worldwide debate about whether the pic was real or photoshopped...
I received a letter from a reporter asking me to find out the truth from Mike - I didn't need to ask Mike -
I knew if his name was on it - it was the real deal.

It is said that the conservatives were trying to discredit Mike- because all of the nature lovers (of which I am one) were using the picture to help their "causes" whether it be, global warming, pollution, state of the world today...whatever.
People were coming forward saying the image was clearly photoshopped - and it was making me very upset to read it.

Mike works with National Geographic and is out of the country doing what he does best - taking awesome photos - but I still placed a call into him immediately and finally yesterday received this email which has already hit every news source I could think of:

Aloha Claudia,

Maybe you can help get the word out. This image is absolutely as I
took it, no manipulation other than slight cropping and sharpening.
Nothing added or taken away. This is exactly how the image appeared.
The feeling of this being a face was of course totally overwhelming
and immediate. Once I connected to the face I couldn't see the ice cap
in any other way. I leave the interpretation of the face and the tears
of the waterfall to the viewer.

Have a great day!

- Mike

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So please, if any of you have received one of those traveling emails with exceptionally "photoshopped images" - remember this one is the REAL DEAL.  Not photoshopped!
Mike and I had a  huge discussion over this just about two weeks ago - he is very big on showing the picture as it was - without adding things or taking things out.  He is a purist with his craft and I totally respect him for that.
That's why I'm writing this journal - because I'm a person who does photoshop -- and literally, when I look at Mike's photos - they are so truly incredible, I'd be afraid to touch them!
If you are interested in seeing some awesome photography - then I urge you to visit his site at:
wildlifeimages.net
Tell him Claudia sent you over. :)
Make sure to read his blog that is linked there - it's a great education!
Peace and All Things Good!
I'm a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi...and a lot of my animal art is due to the influence of Francis in my life.
All you who love nature, animals, God - not necessarily in that order.. :lol:
Listen up - today is a special day.  It is the day we commemorate the life of Saint Francis of Assisi (patron saint of ecology and animals)
So make sure, if you have a special little animal friend or plant friend, and of course, people friends, to say a little prayer....Saint Francis will certainly hear you. ;-)
To learn more go here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_…
Here's a special little scene from one of my favorite movies, "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" - if you've never seen it...get it!
Just remember it was made in the early 70's with music from Donovan - so it has a bit of the "hippy" feel to it.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi5wIW…
www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlN8vI… ( a scene with Saint Clare)
This next scene is before he finds God in his life - and follows Clare as she goes to feed the lepers...
Francesco had a terrible fear of lepers as you'll see here...after his conversion - he would care for them - and never catching the disease...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5RW4S…
Have a beautiful day!  We really celebrate around here! ;-)
A Message from George Carlin Worth Reading
Journal Entry: Fri Aug 15, 2008, 2:36 PM
f you are wanting to commission a pet portrait by me, please contact me at this address:
phatpuppyart@mac.com
I'm a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi...and a lot of my animal art is due to the influence of Francis in my life.
George Carlin was one of my absolute favorite comedians...because he was truly a great mind that saw the humor in our "human condition".
I'm not sure if he truly wrote this - but it did sound like something he'd write...sharing it with you.
Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent...and so very appropriate.
A Message by George Carlin:
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the w ay to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.
We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...
Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.
Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again
Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
George Carlin
